STAGE 01

The Problems & Initial Vulnerabilities

Both homeowners work in technology and cybersecurity. They appreciated the convenience of smart doorbells, baby monitors, smart locks, and robot vacuums, but discovered their devices were continuously sending telemetry to overseas cloud servers.

All IoT devices operated on the same flat Wi-Fi network as their corporate laptops and personal financial devices, creating a serious risk of lateral network traversal.

STAGE 02

Our Forensic Assessment & Findings

Our network security assessment identified three critical privacy and security gaps:

  • Flat Subnet Vulnerability: A compromised smart bulb or camera firmware could scan and access local shared folders and NAS backup drives.
  • Unencrypted Cloud Video: Baby monitor and indoor camera feeds were routing through third-party cloud relays with unknown retention policies.
  • Stale Access Credentials: Six active legacy contractor PINs remained programmed into their smart deadbolt.
STAGE 03

Our Engineered Solutions & Blueprint

We engineered a hardened Smart Home Privacy Architecture:

  • 3-Tier VLAN Segmentation: Built VLAN 10 (Trusted PCs/Phones), VLAN 20 (Isolated IoT Devices), and VLAN 30 (Guest Network).
  • Firewall Isolation Rules: Configured one-way firewall rules blocking all IoT devices from initiating connections to trusted personal devices.
  • Local RTSP Streaming: Kept camera video streams strictly on the local network, accessible remotely only via encrypted WireGuard VPN.
  • Credential Lifecycle: Enforced auto-expiring temporary guest codes on all exterior smart deadbolts.
STAGE 04

The Results & Verified Impact

Zero cloud metadata leakage, 100% local video ownership, and full confidence that smart home convenience no longer compromises sensitive banking or work data.

Property privacy score increased from 40/100 to 93/100.

“As software engineers, we knew our smart home setup was vulnerable, but lacked the time to design a clean VLAN architecture. Shield & Shelter delivered a turnkey privacy blueprint that is bulletproof.”
