Your First 24 Hours in a New Home: A Security Mini-Checklist

The gap between moving in and “getting around to security” is when a home is most exposed. Four jobs deserve your first day.

Re-key everything

Agents, contractors, and previous owners all held keys you can’t audit. One locksmith visit closes every copy at once.

Reset every code

Garage keypads and alarm panels remember their old owners. New codes, new phone numbers on the call list.

Change the router password

The ISP default is printed on a sticker half the neighborhood has photographed.

Find the fake rock

Previous owners hid spares. Retire them all.
